This was my third time seeing them, but my first time getting up to the front row. My experience seeing them up close at First Avenue was like none other. The Flaming Lips is the greatest live act on the planet. They lift their arms as one and bounce around in one blissful, euphoric mess. ![]() The surrealist rock outfit thanks the audience between the pandemonium before the screeching guitar introductions of 'A Spoonful Weighs a Ton' begin and huge balls are launched onto the crowd. They clap, cheer and sing in all the right places and they are rewarded with explosions of glitter and streamers during 'Do You Realize?' which makes the audience roar so loud the whole of Robin Hill park looks toward the main stage. The gig is unpredictable and the pace twists and jerks under the command of Wayne and the crowd simply go with it. As the large eye illuminates the back of the stage, the crowd cheers as Wayne Coyne leads his space rockers onto the stage.īeginning with the spanning 'Look.The Sun Is Rising' the audience know they are instantly in for a spectacle. Some of those watching were devoted fans and others were people following the crowds on recommendation of other festival goers. A perfect booking for the main stage of Bestival, they drew thousands of revellers to the psychedelic live show. The Flaming Lips are easily one of the most charismatic live performers on the circuit. The Flaming Lips can seemingly do no wrong. Since then the band has released a whopping 16 albums and have used their critical acclaim to collaborate with an impressive group of past and current musicians from Neon Indian, to Nick Cave and Erykah Badu. The album “Transmission from the Satellite Heart” released in 1993 was the first in which producer Dave Fridmann had not been involved. in 1990 after a representative of the label saw The Flaming Lips almost burn down a venue in Oklahoma, U.S. A string of recordings on independent labels saw the band expand on their sound introducing tape loops and guitar and vocal effects. The Flaming lips is often associated with psychedelic culture and many of the themes in the Flaming Lips’ earlier releases share this fascination for science fiction, space opera and the metaphysical world. Rarely has there been a band of such eclectic and esoteric appeal, a band’s whose proclivity for the surreal formed a sporadic pop career. Following a succession of drummers, Richard English was chosen as the band’s percussionist and who joined the band to record their self-titled album, released in 1985 on their very own label Lovely Sorts of Death.
